A Clown Without Pity

Storyline:  Mick and Joey get ripped off by a gang of clowns.

Hey, this episode doesn't start on the beach. It begins with Mick & Joey driving in Mick's car trying to "Go where the waves are" according to Rick's voiceover. Apparently they've been driving up and down the coast looking for waves all day, with no luck. The (huge compared to today's standards) cell phone rings, and of course - it's Fritz, with Gordon on speakerphone. Mick tells them he is in no mood to help out any goddaughters or friends in trouble today. Gordon says that he needs a favor for the Mayor of Franklin Beach, there is a gang terrorizing the town. Mick tells him to have the Mayor call the police then. Joey calls out to Mick, "Surf's up!" Mick says he's "gotta go" and hangs up on Gordon. They walk down the beach, past the sign that says they happen to be at the Franklin Beach public beach. How's that for a coincidence?

Suddenly about a 1/2 dozen clowns appear on roller blades & skateboards. They steal Mick & Joey's surf boards, bags & the keys to Mick's car. Mick & Joey are not happy. The next scene has Mick & Joey in the Police Station, filing a report. The cop in charge tells them they were assaulted by the "Big Top Gang". Mick sneers at him, so the cop says - "Perhaps they were copy cat clowns." The cops all laugh and tell the guys to kiss their stuff goodbye, they can't catch them. As they are being escorted out of the station, they are informed that this is part of an ongoing investigation, and to go back to Malibu. "They have cream pies and aren't afraid to use them." the cop tells Mick.

Outside the station, Mick is yelling "I'm hotwiring my own car in the Police Station parking lot and no one notices!" Mick says to Joey firmly, "I want my shirts back." (reviewer groans....WHY??) They call Gordon. Gordon tells them to forget it, while looking at the copy of their police report he's just received by fax. Mick ends up groveling to Gordon that they will take the case...for free. Mick & Joey go shopping for clothes. Woo-Hoo - a step up in wardrobe improvement here, Rick walks into the scene wearing a long-sleeved red shirt with tight black jeans. They should steal his clothes every episode from now on. 

Mick & Joey go over to the local skateboard park. Joey sees a pretty girl (as there are no homely girls in this show) and says to Mick, "Excuse me while I infiltrate." He walks up to her and learns that she is there because she likes to watch the boys skate, she is single and her name is Samantha. She pegs him as a surfer, not a skater. He offers to give her surf lessons (I see a trend forming here). They set a "date" to meet later. Joey walks back over to Mick, while a gang of skaters arrive. Mick thinks they are the clowns. Especially when Mick sees his shirt on one of the skaters - with the sleeves cut off!

After the commercial, we see the gang of skaters skating through the town. They are being reckless and knocking people down. Mick & Joey are following them. The skaters eventually see the guys, and yell for everyone to go. Mick & Joey run after them. They get away (of course) and skate into a mall. When Mick & Joey arrive in the mall, they see the skaters are now dressed like clowns and are tormenting a mall security guard. They again start a chase through the mall, and out to the parking garage. One of the clowns jumps on a motorcycle, the rest grab on in a chain, and get away.

Mick takes Joey to the beach to meet Samantha for the surf lessons. Joey explains to her they can't do the lesson as "some clown stole" his board. She kisses him on the cheek and tells him she'll be around. Mick & Joey go back to the police station. The police have the kid with Mick's shirt in custody, but they let him go. The cop tells Mick, "What do you want me to do, hit him on the head with a rubber chicken until he says he's a clown?" Mick asks about his shirt, the cop tells him the boy said it was a gift. Joey says, "From who - Barnum & Bailey?" (exactly! yells reviewer) The police explain that the kid - Billy Newton, doesn't have a record and they have nothing to hold him for. (how or why they picked him up off camera is not explained) Mick tells Joey the cop is right. Mick then asks him if he's been over to the skate park to talk to the kids over there. The police say they've got a bigger problem with a protection racket going on downtown, and don't have the time for petty crimes.

Mick & Joey leave the station, and see Billy outside waiting for a ride. The car pulls up, with Samantha driving (aw, you saw that coming, right?). Joey is groaning, "Not him, not her with him." Mick & Joey go back to the park. Meanwhile, Samantha is yelling at Billy - and he's retorting back that he's trying to protect her and earn money for rent at the same time. 

The guys pull up and talk to Sam. She explains that Billy is her brother. Meanwhile, a limo pulls up and a voice inside tells Billy to get in. Billy hands over money to the man in the limo, and tells him he couldn't get more as a couple of surfers are following him. Back to Joey & Sam - Joey has made another date with her. He goes to the car to tell Mick. Mick says, "You made a date with his sister - do you know what this means?" Joey replies, 'Yeah, when we get married and have kids her brother can entertain them at birthday parties." Mick tells him to cancel the date, and feed her some false info - that she is their way "in" to the gang. He tells Joey they'll take the bait, as the clowns will want to get back at them. Joey goes over and cancels the date, and they leave.

Gordon & Fritz are called in for help. They meet Mick & Joey at a store, where Gordon pays for skateboards for them. The store clerk says, "I wish my Dad was that cool!" Gordon snarls, 'I'm not their Dad!"

Out in the parking lot, we see 2 clowns skating around Mick's car. Then 2 more show up. Mick calls the police and then tells Joey to help him keep the clowns there. Suddenly, Joey is on roller blades (what happened to the skateboard?) and in the distance, Mick has roller blades on as well. Joey pursues a chase, with Mick's voice-over to "stop them!" You never see Mick skating (wonder why?!) just standing on the blades. (again, where are the skateboards Gordon just bought?) The motorcycle clown shows up, and the clowns make a chain to get away again. Joey grabs the last clown away from the chain, and falls on top of him. He pulls the wig off, and sees that it's Sam. She kisses him and gets up and skates away. Mick walks up carrying a skateboard ??!?!?!? The police arrive, and they explain the clowns got away again. Joey sees Sam in the distance, and goes over to her to tell her they didn't turn her in. She explains that all the clowns are girls getting back at the guys - that they are trying to prove to them they can be just as good. She says that Billy is messed up with the wrong guys, some wise guys. Mick comes over and says to Joey, "I hate lying to cops. Let's go."

Gordon finds info on the leader from what Mick & Joey have reported to him. The leader is Carl Rutherford, and he's wanted in Chicago. Gordon tells Mick to let the cops handle this now. Mick tells him the cops won't believe him.

Mick & Joey go back to the skate park and tell Billy who Rutherford is and that Samantha is planning to go after him. We see Sam show up in a clown suit with a gun pointed at Rutherford. She tells him to leave Billy alone, or she will shoot him. He calls her bluff and his goons grab her and find out her gun is a BB gun. They say they're going to teach her a lesson. Mick & Joey show up and fight with the two goons. Rutherford pulls a real gun on Joey, but then runs when he hears police sirens. Billy skates and catches up with him.

Mick tells the cops, I didn't call you. They say the Mayor did. Sam then steals Mick's car.

Joey is now sitting at a restaurant talking to Samantha. She has returned the car, and says that Billy has promised to go straight. She is also giving up the circus, and might take up surfing. Joey kisses Sam as Mick pulls up. Joey tells her goodbye and they drive away. Mick starts complaining that the car is now pulling to the right. "What she do to it??" Joey says he's full of it...."I get you out in the surf, you're gonna say your board pulls to the right as well." He then says he has something for Mick from Billy. It's Mick's shirt sleeves.

Even though the storyline was hokey, I found this episode entertaining - especially the looks on Rick's face while trying to chase clowns. I give this one 2 1/2 waves. - Michelle P.

You gotta love the names of these episodes sometimes.
You could kind of tell by the opening narration that this episode would be lighter than the last. Mick's outfit - Hawaiian shirt, red/orange shirt underneath, shorts, white socks, and high top tennis shoes. Yikes. Thank God his clothes get stolen early on in the show (although sadly he gets most of them back at the end). I thought it was funny to hear him mention the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). That's where Rick's PO Box is (according to his website).

I love the irony in that Mick turns Gordon down to work on this case, then becomes a victim and gets involved to get his stuff back. Lucky him that they didn't steal his cell phone.

Who was in charge of the wardrobe of this show?!?! Too funny, those funky shorts Mick has on in the beginning. Joey's outfits seem to 'fit' him better, and I don't mean in size. Mick looked so much better once he changed into the red shirt with the black pants. (Red looks great on Rick) 

One of my favorite parts is when Mick and Joey are leaving from the police station after giving their statements about being robbed by the clowns. Mick hollers something about "I hot-wire my own car in the police station parking lot, and no one even notices!" then he mutters "no wonder they can't catch those clowns".....I loved seeing him get aggravated like that, it was cute. Another comical scene is when Joey's 'girlfriend' tells him that he is cute and when he relays this back to Mick, Mick leans over and pinches Joey's cheek and says "Yes, you're so cute" ....LOL

I really like this series, now that I finally got to watch it. I always enjoy a show that incorporates some humor into it somehow. Oh, and I give it 3 waves.....Amy L
This was a pretty `goofy' episode I thought. Some of the humor in it was cute though in a strange way. I like the scenes at the police station when Mick and Joey went to report how the clowns had robbed them. I found it comical how they described the thieves to the local PD. Of course, the police chief pokes fun at them. Mick says, "I'm so glad we could amuse you." The looks of frustration on Mick's face were adorable!

A cute line: the police chief says: "If you do decide to go up against these clowns, be careful. They have cream pies and they're not afraid to use them." LOL Or what about the line where the police chief says, "just remember the story about the "kid who cried clown." Mick says, "I think you mean wolf." Ya think?! 

I got a kick out of Mick fussing over his shirt being stolen and Joey wanting his surf board. And to think…Joey set up surfing lessons when he didn't even have his board. I guess the pretty girl went to his head and he lost his memory! And Mick's wearing my favorite High Tide outfit during the first 15 minutes of this episode! *wink* Need I say more?! He also looks very NICE in the red shirt and black pants (jeans?) he ends up wearing through most of this one. For once…a `normal-looking' outfit. 


Mick talks about how the clowns got everything. Then we hear the cell phone ringing and he says, "maybe not everything." I tend to chuckle with every episode when I see the exchanges between Gordon and Mick, or Gordon and Joey. Mick is always arguing with Gordon about Gordon wanting the guys to do a favor for him. I like the `sense of justice' remark from Mick. 

One of the craziest scenes was when the clowns were robbing them right out of Mick's car. The guys were `tangling' with the clowns, but they got away. That was just strange-looking!!! 

After the "mishap" on the set of The Six Million Dollar Man, it's no wonder that when Joey needs to chase the clowns on rollerblades, that Mick (Rick) is NOT skating. LOL. I'm actually a big fan of skating, of any kind, so that was one of the pluses to this episode for me. Just watching them fly around on their wheels makes me want to drag out my old roller skates! 

I thought Joey's little romance with Samantha was sweet. Turns out she too was dressed as a clown. 

The clowns during the mall scene, stealing and taunting security, was also amusing. I know it may sound `mean`…but I get the biggest kick out of watching Rick run! I thought it was funny how these kids on skates were getting the best of Mick and Joey, the ever-powerful, surfing crime busters. But in the end, like with every High Tide I`ve seen so far…the Barrett brothers win once again, and justice is served.  - Kelley Pearson
