COME ON
EVERYBODY
(words and music by Rick
Springfield)
Oh come on
Everybody
Everybody
Sing it
Come on
Everybody
Everybody
Sing it
Though my shoes are thin, Lord
And my coat is a hand me down
But this song is mine
So's this old guitar
If you've been down the end of town
And have seen my face before
Though I ain't had a meal in days (I'm not complaining)
Oh, cuz as soon as I start to play
You know it's just for you
Cause I love it here
In Leicester's Square waiting
Waiting for the people to come
Everybody
Everybody
Sing it
Come on
Everybody
Everybody
Sing it
Though my shoes are thin
And my coat is a hand me down
But this song is mine
So's this old guitar
Ooh I spend my life by the riverside
Unless somebody takes me in
If they do or they don't
It's all the same to me
Why I live the life I do
Living and singing for free
Cause I love it here
In Leicester's Square
Waiting... Waiting for the people to come
Come on
Come on
Come on
Come on
Everybody
Everybody
Sing it
Sing it
Come on
Everybody
Everybody
Sing it
Alright, I said come on
Everybody,
Everybody, sing it
Sing it, sing it, sing it
I said come on everybody sing it
I said come on everybody....
(total playing time: 3:44)
Interesting to note: Leicester Square is a cool place in London's West End in the
heart of Theatreland. There are lots of restaurants, Clubs and theatres etc. in the area
so it is usually very crowded and lively especially in the evening. It is close to
Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden and just a short walk away is the River Thames which
was referred to in the song when he said 'I spend my life by the Riverside'.

According to US
I nominate this one from this album as a possible remake. You know, all those questions that go around from fans now and then about which song you'd like to hear Rick redo. This is a pretty catchy song from the 70's that would probably sound even better with today's sound.
I've never felt that this was an autobiographical song, because try as I might I just cannot picture Rick as a homeless person. He's too pretty :-) I'm thinking he was inspired by a vagrant he saw when he was making his way thru London, hence the reference to Leicester Square. (which prior to us doing this review, I had no idea where this place was, or if it was real -so thanks Roseanne!)
Personally I love the way Rick says/sings the word "guitar" in this song. It just sounds...I dunno, neat I guess. I'm also really tickled that he brought the back up ladies back for the Rock of Life album! Just kidding. It kind of gives it a sort of gospel feel though, them harmonizing in the background.

I absolutely love the opening guitar music.
And there's that "been" word again (pronounced bean). I don't know why I
find that so appealing.
"Though I ain't had a meal in days"....that's one thing that hasn't changed -
somebody feed that boy!
I like this song, it's kind of happy go lucky, and an expression of doing something for
the love of the art and not for the money. - rlh
