BRAND NEW FEELING
(words  by Rick Springfield)

It's a Brand New Feeling
That I never ever had before
And I'm always amazed at the range of my emotions

Cause it's a Brand New Feeling
Getting better every minute of the day
And it fits me like a glove
And it rocks me like a boat
On the ocean

Ah who'd a believed it
Oh I must be getting lazy
Spending so much time
With just one girl
Lord this is crazy
But I'm not running anywhere anyhow
I'm staying right here
It'll do for now

Cause it's a Brand New Feeling
That I never ever had before
And I'm always amazed at the range of my emotions

Cause it's a good, good feeling
Getting better every minute of the day
And it fits me like a glove
And it rocks me like a boat
On the ocean

Brand New Feeling
Brand New, Brand New Feeling

You look up and smile
This never happen before
God this is really strange
Let me have some more

Mmmm coconut butter
Pull the curtains tight
Feeling better already
I'm staying in tonight

Cause it's a Brand New Feeling
That I never ever had before
And I'm always amazed at the range of my emotions

Cause it's a good, good feeling
Getting better every minute of the day
And it fits me like a glove
And it rocks me like a boat
On the ocean

Brand New Feeling
Brand New, Brand New Feeling

I said it fits me like a glove
And it rocks me like a boat
On the ocean

It's a Brand New
It's a Brand New
It's a Brand New Feeling

Remember a few songs back I mentioned how much reviewing this album is like having to take some awful-tasting bad medicine for me? Well, I'm holding my nose before I swallow once again. I had so much venom in this review, that I hacked it up and started over twice. I just thought that much hate spewing out of one email just wasn't good for any type of list. :-)

This is the fingernails on the chalkboard, bleeding from the ears, I'd rather listen to severe weather sirens at close proximity, make me ill just thinking about it, song of the album. If there is a Hell and I end up there for some reason, it'll be this song playing over and over and over. I even copied this CD, eliminating this song from the playlist so I wouldn't have to ever hear it again. I'm one of those 'pretend it doesn't exist and maybe it'll go away' type of people. Then reviews started pouring in....I was reading that people really liked this one. So I'm thinking, "Maybe it wasn't as bad as I remembered."

I was wrong. I still hear some evil laughing in the background having to admit that. Ha ha! Got you to listen to it again!

Okay, ready?!?! Let's all go to the Hoedown! This song is proof that Rick should never seek venue in the country music forum. Seriously. I can excuse away all the twangy-ness of Speak to the Sky given the period of time it was written because the world was a different place then, but c'mon -this song comes about 15 years after that. This is my "What were you thinking, smoking, dreaming, eating...when writing this one Rick?" song. If this had been written for a Brady Bunch, Partridge Family or even a Facts of Life musical episode I could forgive him for this. Seeing as how I pretty much watched those faithfully as they aired (and hundreds more just as cheesy as a teen) I can vouch that it did not show up on any of those.

So, in an attempt to try to create an impartial review I figured I could pick apart some lyrics without necessarily listening to the song. Then I realized the whole damn song just bugs the crap out of me so much, that that is probably the wrong direction to go as well. "Coconut butter"?? Please don't make me go there. That whole stanza is just begging for a snicker, snort and apparently a whole guffaw from reading what the rest of you thought about it.

Therefore, my apologies to anyone who really, really likes this song. I just don't get it. - Michelle P.

My feelings about this song are mixed - Again the predominant beat of the song is so quick I feel like I have to keep up with the song and it's a bit exhausting. Then it turns into a revival song with the chorus for "Branch New Feeling, Brand Brand new Feeling...."

To the meaning of the song - on initial impressions this seems to be about 'love'. Brand new feeling he's never felt before for one person. Awww... look he fell in love! And so it's all very sweet and nice. Then apparently my mind took a left turn and suddenly the fact that he never says 'love' made me ponder.... and I looked at the song with a whole new light. Amazed at his range of emotions? Fits me like a glove? Rocks me like a boat? You look up and smile? And finally "let me have some more?" Hmmm.... perhaps, just perhaps, an entirely different brand new feeling

So now I admit - take out the constant drum beat and I might be able to relax and appreciate the song just a bit more. - Jen H.

This is such a cute song in my book! I love the positive feel of the music & lyrics…I love the handclapping sound…I love how "happy" Rick sounds here, I like the tone of his voice, I like the harmonizing in the chorus, and I like the sing-along value to the song. To me, it is just a refreshing song coming from Rick. After hearing some of the songs on the "album" before this one, it is such a pleasant distraction. Kind of like the feeling I get when I hear Eden, after so many songs prior that deal with mixed emotions, hurt, pain, anger, confusion, shock, heartache, searching, etc. This is a nice addition to those other emotions. A break…if you will. It has that feel to me. As if Rick just "found" someone who makes him want to sing a happy tune! Even if the find ended up as temporary…it seems he was having some moments of happiness & bliss!

My favorite part (which is quite comical really….for him to say something so descriptive in itself…LOL) is the "mmmm coconut butter, pull the curtains tight, I'm feeling better already, I'm staying in tonight." (that mmmm…he was really feeling the love there wasn't he??! Or the lust, whichever fits!) Ok…so I'm assuming he's with this new love and they want to shut to world out for the night and possibly give each other a massage!? How cute is that?! I also like: "just look at me smile, this never happened before…God this is really strange, let me have some more." So he was not used to smiling and feeling THIS happy with other relationships? Like a dish of food---LOL---pass me some more of that good stuff!!!

I love the sound of his voice & how catchy it is when he says, "and it fits me like a glove and it rocks me like a boat on the ocean." (O-o-cean!) She must have felt truly "perfect" to Rick at the time! She rocked his world! And I think the whole relationship/fling (whichever it may have been) just floored him, and surprised him in the best way. He could not believe he was feeling THIS good…a brand new feeling & he was amazed at the "range of emotions." Like so many of us, he had/has his ups & downs emotionally. Maybe he really thought he'd never feel this much elation with anyone? Too cute how he says he must "be getting lazy, spending so much time with just one girl…Lord this is crazy." LOL So he was used to lots of love affairs in which he didn't allow himself to become too close?? And now, this was the one who just SWEPT him away, and he wanted no one but her. Thank goodness for a few happy/chipper songs in Rick's book of music. Personally, I find it soothing & refreshing! Way to go Rick. This one is a thumbs up in my book. - Kelley Pearson

This is a very upbeat little song, a little different for Rick. I think this probably came out of a period in his life when he was feeling pretty good about it. I'm not sure I like the music, it sounds a little country to me. Considering the fact that he was very young when he wrote this, I think he probably had a new girlfriend and this song is about those feelings you have when you first start a new relationship and everything seems perfect. His voice sounds really good and I can hear a little Aussie here and there, very cute. Based upon the lyrics, this apparently was a brand new feeling for him because he just wouldn't let anyone get that close to him, perhaps because he was so focused on his career that he felt an intense relationship might hold him back in some way. Overall,I like the song. - Elizabeth S.
