BOP 'TIL YOU DROP
(words and music by Rick Springfield)
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Keep on working day and night
Don't stop 'til you get what you want
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Burn the candle burn it bright
Love will have to wait
You wake up wired and draw on your makeup
And the city breathes
And the city jumps to life
Lately it seems
Your time is all used up
Chasing dreams
Of money and the good life
But there is something you've been thinking of
Lately you're feeling the power of love
Everybody says it's so hard to hold
The alarm rings
You gotta get up, you gotta get up
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Keep on working day and night
Don't stop 'til you get what you want
Bop 'til you drop
And you're sitting pretty
Burn the candle, burn it bright
Love will have to wait
Woe, woe, woe, woe, woe
People say you're the lucky one
But you don't believe it
And you want to stop
And you want to take some time
To suss out a feeling and look for a reason
And the flesh is weak
But the spirit is willing
'Cause there is something you've been thinking of
Lately you're feeling the power of love
Everybody says it's so, so hard to hold
The alarm rings
You gotta get up, you gotta get up
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Keep on working day and night
Don't stop 'til you get what you want
Bop 'til you drop
And you're sitting pretty
Burn the candle, burn it bright
Love won't, love won¹t wait
There is something you've been thinking of
Lately you're feeling the power of love
Everybody says it's so, so hard to hold
The alarm rings
You gotta get up, you gotta get up
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Keep on working day and night
Bop 'til you drop
Bop
Bop 'til you drop
Bop
Bop 'til you drop
Bop
Bop 'til you drop
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Keep on working day and night
Don't stop 'til you get what you want
Bop 'til you drop
And you're sitting pretty
Burn the candle, burn it bright
Love will, love will have to wait
Bop 'til you drop
In the hot city
Keep on working day and night
Don't stop til you get what you want
Bop 'til you drop
And your sitting pretty
Burn the candle, burn it bright
Love will have to wait
Woe, woe, woe, woe, woe
Bop 'til you drop

According to US
Now we go from my two favorites (LS & DWA) to the one I like the least of all the RS songs from H2H. (LOL, I re-read that line and it sounds like I'm talking in some sort of weird Morse code) Bop Til Ya Drop. I'm not sure why the producers or whomever contacted Rick and requested another song from him felt the need to put music in 'the running scene' in this movie. This was just one of many disjointed-doesn't flow with the storyline- scenes that frankly could've been cut. That leads me to believe that this song would have never existed as we know it and frankly, that might've been a good thing.
First...the good. I always like to give good news first. This song has a really good beat to work out to. If you're into working out that is. I for one haven't been in that mode for some time. However, you can't run to it -unless you do this Frankenstein-ish sort of staggering run to the beat. (Trust me, I've tried.) Which is funny when you think about it since Jamie & Diana are running to this song in the movie! But, it does have a good rhythm to get your heart rate going for various other types of ways of getting in shape.
Here's what I consider bad. It could probably just be me (ok, it is me...just don't tell me you know it's me) but this came out around the time that Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop" was released. Everyone know what that one was about? If you don't -Google it. I've already got one Rick song review that covers this subject. So I hear "Bop" and I think "that". Now, I know it's not that. I can't relate it to the words and/or theme of the song. But I just can't help it. The word Bop is forever spoiled for me by Cyndi Lauper, she of the so unusual.
Good or bad, it amazes me that this song is currently being used not once, but twice...sort of like bookends in the current Medley of 80's tunes being performed live. I never really liked the video (I don't care how geeked Rick was to have David Lynch direct it -it was awful) and the words are just 'eh' for me. A lot of fans I've encountered consider this as one of their favorites, and I don't get it. There are so many songs that are forgotten that I'd love to hear even a snippet of it in a medley by Rick, and this song gets sampled two times at their expense? It's just not right, I tell
ya. - Michelle P.
Hmmm…where do I start with this one? I'm not really sure HOW I feel about this song. It's "iffy" for me. It depends on how I happen to be hearing it at that moment, I suppose. It's definitely on the lower end of my most-liked Rick songs. :-q I heard Rick say that he wrote this song on the spur. He said something to the affect (and I'm paraphrasing) that he was vacationing on a tropical beach, taking a bit of a break from all the H2H stuff, when he got a call from his managers and producers that they needed one more song for the soundtrack. He says that he kind of whipped this song up for them while hanging on the beach, and really didn't give it a lot of deep thought. Despite all of that, I will admit, the song is catchy…and I find that when it comes on I cannot resist singing along to it. I just chant along and don`t give it much thought, which is a lot different for me than when I hear many of his other songs. {It seems I used to like this song a lot more in the 80's than I do now. } Even though it's not a favorite of mine, I can still find a few good points in it.
***Here's what I DO like about the song:
I like that he was able to create a half-way sensible song on the spur of the moment. I guess the serenity of the ocean reminded him of what he was NOT missing back home with the pump and grind of "the industry." I `get' what he's saying, with the messages about the `rat race' of the city, or just the hectic nature of working towards what you want.
Rick's voice, pitch and inflections sound good in the song for the most part. My favorite vocal inflection here would have to be after all the "Bops" he shouts out near the end. He does a little, "Mmmmmm" sound right before he says…"Bop til you drop." That's pretty hot. ;-)
I like how he was able to combine the movie/soundtrack title into this song and it fits! "Lately you're feeling the power of love. Everybody says it's so, so hard to hold." The song even works for the movie, as they are living in the `big city.'
One last plus (a major plus) is that now I can visualize his performance on Beat of the Live Drum when I hear this song, rather than the actual music video. Yikes. His performance on stage was fun and sci-fi looking, with stage props and a guy on harmonica. That helps the song a bit! LOL
***Ok, now for what I don't like about this song:
I think it's kind of cheesy, and lyrically it DOES sound thrown together. But okay, Rick is `allowed' a quickie now and then! LOL!
The video! I do not dig that video too much for some reason. More on that in my video review…
I hate the way this song gets stuck in my head! :-P I'd much rather be humming Love Somebody or even Taxi Dancing after listening in full to H2H, but NO…this is the song that keep grating on my psyche hours later.
I don't like the song title either. Maybe because "Bop" and "Drop" rhyme??? I usually love rhyming, but for some reason I don't like how this song title rhymes!
And one last thing I don't like about this song…I would hate for someone who wasn't a Rick fan (yet) to hear just this song and think the rest of his songwriting was like Bop `Til You Drop. The lyrics really aren't that bad, but I just think he spoils us with much better songs….songs that dig a bit deeper lyrically. I was happy when I learned that he didn't give this song too much thought when he wrote it, or I might still be thinking he had a momentary lapse of reason!

This is my least favorite song of Rick's on the HTH soundtrack. I'm not sure what it is I don't like about it. I, too, like the way he throws in "hard to hold" within the lyrics of the song, to tie it into the movie. At one time, I did wonder if "bop" actually meant something else - guess not....
When I hear the opening part of the song, I always think of the scene from the movie where Rick and Diana (funny, I use his real name and her screen name), go running (is that even the scene where the song was playing?)

This gets the award for the most annoying song Rick Springfield has
ever written. There are not many of his compositions that I can not find some redeeming quality within. This one is it. There is
absolutely nothing I like about this song.I can't believe how many reissues and compilations this song has been included on. And it's
included in the medley! Why! And the fact that it rose to # 20 on the charts just floors me. What kind of word is "Suss"? I don't even like
the video. I do admit that I will watch it with the volume off so I can see Rick in all his 80's hotness. Sorry Rick,I still love you. We
are all allowed a certain number of mistakes. - Elizabeth S.
I have heard so many people say that they don't like this song, and some have even said it is the one they really 'hate'. I actually like it. Granted, it is somewhat corny, but it's catchy and has an upbeat 'feel' to it, so I really enjoy it.
Again, this is another song made for a movie, so I really don't believe that Rick would have ever written it off of the top of his head. It has its moments.......I love the part ....
But there is something you've been thinking of
Lately you're feeling the power of love
Everybody says it's so hard to hold The alarm rings
You gotta get up, you gotta get up - Amy L
I'd rather just drop, thank you very much. Yes, I'd rather just drop this song
right off my play list and bop all over it until it breaks. I cringe when I hear it...the
intro, the supposed guts of the song, and then ending...why oh why he includes it
in the opening and closing of his live medley I'll never know. It hurts my ears...don't
care for the higher vocals, don't care for the beat that seems to be bouncing off every
room in the room....even it is confused and doesn't know where to go.
Rick has never disappointed me lyrically, so if this song holds any bones, it is in
the lyrics...which unfortunately is overshadowed by the awful beat. So, even
though I would say it is okay lyrically, it still does not showcase his talent for
writing. I find it interesting that this is the song on the sound track that does feature
the title of the movie in it. - Kat M. |
