ACT OF FAITH
(Music by Rick Springfield, Bob Marlette and Tim Pierce / Words by Rick Springfield)

I tell you honestly
Don't you go and throw your heart away
I know it's so hard to do
You've got to let go when you wanna hold on
I know how much you miss him
Celebrate what you had
Don't cry about the things left unsaid
It'll do no good

You look for mercy and a meaning somewhere
You know
That the hurting won't go
'Til you walk through the fire

It's gonna take an act of faith
To stand up and face the day
It's gonna take an act of faith
Nobody can make you stay
It's gonna take an act of faith

Maybe love will find it's way
Back into your life
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it

Stand up, don't you fall
You just take good care of where you are
You're thinking life's through with you
That's not what he'd want or what you should do
I know you loved him baby celebrate who he was
I know you know you've got to go on
And live your life
Go down to the river of the spirit that
Runs through you
And lay yourself down
In the healing waters

It's gonna take an act of faith
To stand up and face the day
It's gonna take an act of faith
Nobody can make you stay
It's gonna take an act of faith
Maybe love will find it's way back into your life

Love is a healer
There is no purpose served in holding on
Love is a healer
There is no understanding why
Love is a healer
There is no sin in you that brought this to your door
My love, it just, is

Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it
Here's my heart my love is in it

It's gonna take an act of faith
To stand up and face the day
It's gonna take an act of faith
Nobody can make you stay
It's gonna take an act of faith
Maybe love will find it's way back into your life

It's gonna take an act of faith
Stand up and face the day
It's gonna take an act of faith
Nobody can make you stay
It's gonna take an act of faith
Maybe love will find it's way back into your life

It's gonna take an act of faith
To stand up and face the day
It's gonna take an act of faith
Nobody can make you stay ...

Song Facts: This can be found on Karma.  Rick performed this song in Harris, MI on June 17, 2000 (the early show)

Rick says:
Bobby Brookes a friend of mine died on the helicopter that killed Stevie Ray Vaughn and this is a song to his widow Barbara that I sent her when it was written (about 4 years ago) - melodicrock.com

Rick also says:  about a friend of mine who died in ah ...it's about death... but when you get to our age ... people start dying ... think about dying ... I was gonna call the album, actually, BEAUTIFUL DEATH or something - That was one of my ideas for it ...  Bobby Brooks, it's actually a song I wrote about his wife, Barbara. And Bobby's an agent ... My agent back through the '80s ... He was killed in a Helicopter crash with, Stevie Ray Vaughan. - eiozine.com

Footnote - background photo was taken in Harris, MI 6/17/00.  Rick did a song request of Act of Faith, fans furnished the lyrics

According to US

This is the *sigh* song of the album for me. What I mean is, there seems to be one on every RS album that makes me just sigh at the thought of Rick singing it. (Ok, so he's singing it to me - but don't tell me you haven't had those fantasies either) The single line "Here's my heart my love is in it" just makes me want to melt into a big puddle of goo.

I know this was written for a friend about the tragic death of her husband. I also know that since it's appearance on the Karma album, it's become a lot of things for a lot of people - but for me it's a lesson of learning on how to go on about any kind of hardship in life, not just the death of a loved one. An anthem of sorts, it's kind of become a touchstone song for a group of people I consider my friends. This song is another in a string of "pick me up songs" that I cling to in my times of need, whether they're great or small. Actually the whole album does that for me.

I'm not sure that I've heard this one done live. Does that mean I've been to too many live shows? I do know that this one should have been played on the radio - it's just so damn radio worthy in my opinion. However, I feel this is just another gem that us Rick Springfield fans are privy to - something we can treasure as "our own" and not share it with others. Thanks Rick. - Michelle P.

This is another song from Karma that had a huge impact on me. Not when I first listened to it, but later. When JFK, Jr. died in July of 1999, it hit me so hard in a way I never expected. He wasn't ever someone I followed, didn't buy a magazine because he was on the cover, didn't watch a tv interview just because he was on it, but I guess somewhere in the back of my consciousness, I always saw him as our hope for the future (and I tend to vote Republican). When he died, it hit me hard. I think it was because there's so much evil in the world, and I saw him as a source of goodness and the unfairness of it all just overwhelmed me. It was like God was not on our side. So when I pulled Karma back out again in 2000, this song reminded me of his death and there was a lot of comfort and realness in the song. I will always associate this song with that.

Probably my favorite line from this is - there is no sin that brought this to your door, My love, it just is. (a precursor to it is what it is, maybe?). And of course "here's my heart, my love is in it". - rlh

What a beautiful song! I figured this song was written for someone who had lost their husband, but until now I didn't know who it was
intended for. I can't begin to imagine the pain this woman went through losing her husband, but I would think that this song had to have touched her heart. It just goes to show you how much love Rick has for his family and friends. Here's my heart my love is in it...that just says it all! - Char P.
