SOUL TO SOUL
(Music & Lyrics by Rick Springfield)

Someone along the way derailed your train
And I'm having a real hard time
Getting any love through your defenses
You listen to your heat but I know how well
You listen to your heart
If this is the real thing
Then I want more from you than flesh and blood

So, soul to soul
I know how it feels
Between lover to lover
We're gonna be
So, soul to soul
Like a magnet to steel
Just like lover to lover
We're gonna be

We don't make love so much
Have a bedroom crucifixion
Any love that you receive
Only seems to go skin deep
You lost the key
Don't throw away the house
Tho' I love your flesh and blood
This is the real thing
And I want more from you than skin to skin

So, soul to soul
I know how it feels
Between lover to lover
We're gonna be
So, soul to soul
Like a magnet to steel
Just like lover to lover
We're gonna be

Somewhere there's an altar
She lays herself across it
And she hands me the blade but I don't
I don't stick it in

So, soul to soul
And the faithful will kneel
Every sister and brother
We're gonna be
So, soul to soul
And I wish it was real
Just like lover to lover
We're gonna be

And if this ain't what you want
You better tell me now baby
I want more from you than skin to skin

So, soul to soul
I know how it feels
Between lover to lover
We're gonna be
So, soul to soul
Like a magnet to steel
Just like lover to lover
We're gonna be

Somewhere there's an alter
She lays herself across it
And she hands me the blade but I can't
I won't stick it in

So, soul to soul
And the faithful will kneel
Every sister and brother
We're gonna be
So, soul to soul
And I wish it was real
Just like lover to lover
We're gonna be

Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul
Soul to soul...

Someone better not try to tell me this one is about Liam! Just kidding. I had said prior to us getting into the reviews of this album that this song was my favorite. (aha! she said was) I don't know what it is about this one, but I just really like singing along with it. I love the smooth like feel to the melody, it kinda just strolls along thru the song. It's a comfortable song to me. I had always wondered to myself if the love I felt for this song was my subconcious comparing it to my ultimate favorite Rick tune, Souls. But I realized that listening to this deeper (in review mode, LOL) that this sounds alot like AOTH to me lyrically. It's kind of the same message, in AOTH Rick is singing "don't try to tell me you think it's all physical" whereas in this one, he is looking for more than the physical connection, he wants more than the physical relationship, he wants your soul. I have come to the conclusion that I have definitely sold my soul to this man, can I get an Amen?!?!

I adore some of the analogies Rick uses in this song, and how he compares being soul to soul "like a magnet to steel". Sigh....the visual on that one is a killer. "You lost the key, don't throw away the house". What? Sounds like something my grandmother would say (she is the queen of those sayings) but for some reason I don't care why Rick put that in, he just sounds good singing it. :-)

Speaking of sounding good, I really appreciate the woman wailing in this song (for lack of a better, more appropriate musical term). It really adds to the "soulfulness" of the song, and it's not something we hear much in terms of Rick's music. He comes off that wail sounding more soulful himself. My favorite part of this one is when he's singing, "And if this ain't what you want, you better tell me now baby 'cos I want more from you than skin to skin". Ahhhh, heaven. I feel like I've attended the revival meetin' of the year, with good ol' brother Springfield gettin' down with the choir. Can I get another Amen? - Michelle P.

This song is unbelievable. The man is a master with words! I physically shiver every time I hear the 1st verse (well, the whole song really!), “someone along the way derailed your train, and I’m having a real hard time getting any love through your defenses.” And my favorite line (for the words & especially the smooth way he glides out the words), “you listen to your heat, but I know how well, you listen to your heart.” Yow! I love how he says, “how well.”

This is obviously about a woman who has up some major emotional walls. Someone hurt her along the way, and she can still go through the motions of sex (you listen to your heat), but has a hard time letting anyone into her heart. And he wants so much more from her, “And I want more from you than skin to skin.” He feels they are soul mates, if only she’ll let him in. He even tells her it’s okay, “you lost the key don’t throw away the house.” So she lost some trust along the way. No reason to throw away her heart, or a love that’s real.

This is amazing writing coming from a man. Of course Rick is an amazing writer! Men are often stereotyped as being out for just “flesh & blood,” when in fact, there are so many men who want a soul mate, and who long for more than just the sexual end of a relationship.

Another of my favorite lines (and again, for the words he uses, but also for the amazing way he says the words…a way that literally gives me a chill) would be, “we don’t make love so much as have a bedroom crucifixion. Any love that you receive only seems to go skin deep.” Wow! What a visual. Pure sex. No lovemaking. The act has become, or is simply an act, rather than a bonding of two people. Again, she is not letting him into her heart. “Somewhere there’s an alter, she lays herself across it. And she hands me the blade but I won’t I won’t stick it in.” I’m not too sure about that line, unless it means that she is willing to give him the sex only (and not her heart), and he refuses to settle for just the sex. He “won’t stick it in,” I think means he won’t play that game. He is definitely after more from her, which seems to be common in so much of Ricks writing. Like so many of us, he wants a deeper love than just the physical. How sweet! One of many reasons I love Ricks music so much. And he rarely says exactly what he means, word for word. He uses visual metaphors & double meanings, which I find so thoughtful and entertaining.

One more note…does the opening music have a hidden meaning related to the song? It might. I somehow doubt it was by accident! It almost sounds like factory machines, which make a very monotonous sound (going through continual motions), which is what he’s getting at in this song. She is going through repetitions she’s become accustomed to because of the emotional wall, and keeping in time with her programmed emotions (like a machine, staying right on track). It’s become routine. It also sounds like someone trying to chip away at something metal. Could that be on purpose too? Maybe it’s him trying to break through & into her heart. This song gets a BIG thumbs up! Pure heaven on earth.....Kelley Pearson
