A Sign of Life
(Rick Springfield/Matt Bissonette)
A footprint in an alien nation
One step for all mankind
You can't wait for that invitation
To probe around my little mind
Looking for a face in a galaxy of space
If you're really, really there we kind of need you down here
Oh why don't you come and show yourself to me
In all this universe I know you're not that green
Are you out there, can you sympathize with all us human beings?
And show me a sign of life, gimme a sign of life
Just one sign of life, that's what I need
Beam down through the radiation
A cold earth is where you'll find
That this world is a destination
A close encounter with another kind
Head to home base on a rocket ship of faith
If you're really, really near we kind of need
you right here
Oh why don't you come and show yourself to me
In all this universe I know you're not that green
Are you out there, can you sympathize with all us human beings
And show me a sign of life, gimme a sign of life
Just one sign of life, that's what I need
Are you real or make believe
Why won't you let me see
Oh why don't you come and live your life with me
In all this universe I know you're not that green
Are you out there, can you sympathize with all us human beings?
Show me a sign of life (COME SHOW ME), sign of life (COME SHOW ME), sign of life
(COME SHOW ME)
sign of life (COME SHOW ME)

According to US
Finally...a song from Rick about his alien fascination! This is a good
one for me. I too have a love of all things alien, UFO's, outer space, alien
conspiracy theories and anything of the sort that's a mystery to mankind.
The music and vibe of this one make it a "feel-good song." The spacey sounds at
the start are very cool! It's catchy and fun to sing along with too. That's
pretty much it for me, as I don't find anything really "deep" or hidden in the
lyrics. I don't sense any double entendres or the songwriting angles Rick
normally uses. I see this one as being pretty simple. It expresses his curiosity
in the unknown. I also hear a brief part in the music that makes me stop and
go, "yes, Rick is a child of the 60's and 70's." But it's something I can't
quite put my finger on. I'm not sure if it's the riffs, the beat, the melody or
just the way he sings the words. Maybe it's a combination of all those things. I
hear it mostly during the part where he sings, "Are you out there, can you
sympathize with all us human beings?" It reminds me slightly of something Rick
did in the 70's, but again...I can't figure out what it is. Maybe it's the
background singing in that part? Does anyone else hear that? It just has that
vibe for a quick moment. I think the opening lyrics are pretty
straightforward---"a footprint in an alien nation, one step for all mankind." I
take this exactly like it sounds...as man landing on the moon to explore for
other worlds beyond ours. I remember as a child wanting to be an astronaut. I
wanted to fly to the moon and see what outer space is like. The moon and other
planets still hold a major fascination for me to this day (but my desire to
actually get into one of those very dangerous space crafts and jet off into the
unknown has since passed!) I did purchase a telescope some years ago though!
That should suffice. My daughter and I did see something very odd a few years
ago that was "hovering" near the mountains in front of our house one morning
just before the sun came up and it had odd colors swirling around it.....but
that's a whole other story. And no, I'm not crazy. lol She saw it too. Actually,
she saw it first and asked me what it was. It was quite unsettling when my mind
couldn't wrap around what it was. But again, who knows? It may have been
something very explainable. If in fact there are other life forms out there
besides "us," I feel they are more advanced than we are...and they might
actually "sympathize" with us for being so far behind and simple. This is a
topic I've found can be touchy since I know there's people who totally believe
in aliens (that would be me), those who flat out do not believe in aliens and
those who ride the fence. I've always theorized that as a human race on earth we
would be pretty self-centered egotistical jerks to think that we are the one and
only form of intelligent life that was created. There's way too much "space" out
there for us to be the only ones. Just because we can't see it or don't
understand it, in my mind doesn't make it not true. We marvel over everyday
things such as the miracle of birth, or someone missing death by the skin of
their teeth, etc...and we tend to just roll with it. So for me personally, life
on other planets falls right into the same category, something we can't fully
explain or understand. Again, that's just my opinion, even if it does sound far
out to some. Rick says, "Are you real or make believe, why won't you let me
see?" I kind of think they already have shown themselves with the unexplained
crop circles and the many UFO sightings. But I do get what he's saying. We
always want something more tangible, something solid...real proof. Maybe we can
send this song blasting into outer space and they will hear it?! Overall,
this is a fun and simple sing-along song from RS and leaves me with a good
feeling. They don't all have to be twisted and dark, do they? - Kelley Pearson

Like Gabriel, this song has a very
spiritual/religious feel to it, or at least that is the path I have chosen to
take with it. I think when listening to this, you can either see it as him
speaking to life on another planet or speaking to a higher being. I have chosen
the latter. The one part I was having the hardest time with was "I know you're
not that green" and then someone pointed out to me that green could be referring
to inexperienced. Once I could apply that meaning to the song I was good to go
with it having the meaning that spoke more to me. I think the reason I like this
song so much more than Gabriel is this song is kind of tongue in cheek. "you
can't wait for that invitation to probe around my little mind" My little
mind....makes me smile.
I think we've all been in a place where we've
wanted a sign, a sign that we're going in the right direction, a sign that
there's someone out there that's going to help you get through. I really like
"are you real or make believe, why won't you let me see?" I also really like the
ending of the song, the pleading/shouting of the Come Show Me.
If Magnificent
Vibration is ever made into a movie, I think this song could be part of the
sound track. - rlh
