Love
Screws Me Up
(Rick Springfield)
Demo
It's no big deal
Not worth the trouble
This serves the last time
I walk out of the rubble
I watch my heart
in your delicate hands
slammed against my kitchen wall
It bursts like a bubble
I look in the mirror and I see
the living, breathing proof
and I think it's time that I,
That I face the truth
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na ,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na ,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Love Potion #9,
shucks I must have missed it
Jesus tell me is that
what got me so twisted
and all the hippies and the magazines and tv
keep selling true love
Like it really existed
I want to drink from that picture perfect loving cup
but I'm only human
So I fuck it up
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na
,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na ,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Oh, love screws me up
And our little thing
shot down before it starts
swept up in the cans and the bottles and the busted hearts
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na
,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na ,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na ,na, na, na)
Screws me up
Love (na, na, na, na, na, na ,na, na, na)
Screws me up
(repeat na, na's)
Songs for the End of the World
Version
It's no big deal Not worth the trouble
This is the last time I walk out of the rubble I watched my heart
In your delicate hands Slammed against my kitchen wall It burst like a
bubble And it made me wish Love slept with the fish Or at least had
a lame-brained stunt body double In the mirror I see the living,
breathing proof And I think it's time that I, That I face the truth
Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na, na, na, na, na, na)
Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na, na, na)
Love
Potion number 9, I guess I must have missed it Jesus tell me is that
What got me so twisted? All the hippies, magazines and TV Keep selling
true love Like it really existed I want to drink from that picture
perfect loving cup But I fuck it up
Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na,
na, na, na, na, na) Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na,
na, na, na, na, na) Love screws me up
And our little scene is
Shot down before it starts Swept up with the trash And the bodies
And the wreckage And the garbage And the junk And the scrap And
the drunk and the busted hearts
Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na, na, na, na,
na, na) Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na, na, na, na,
na, na) Love (na, na, na, na, na) Screws me up (na, na, na, na, na,

According to US I'm just going to throw
this thought out there - anyone else think this one should have been titled
Sex Screws Me Up? Show of hands - Ok, what about the line "slammed
against my kitchen wall, it burst like a bubble"- anyone think of the pickle
jar/arrest incident? Show of hands - Now that I've got that off my chest
and put my thoughts right out there, you'd be surprised to hear that I like
this song, right? Well dammit, I do. It's a shame that I know so much about
this man that I have to fill my brain with all the nonsense that he's done
because this song friggin' rocks. If you can convince me it's not
autobiographical, well then I'm buying you a damn drink. Right after I go
pick up the stool from You & Me that Rick has unceremoniously thrown across
the kitchen/stage like a bad-ass Rock Star. I'm starting to believe
though, after reading some of my past reviews of the RS catalog, the songs
that have breathing, or lots of repeated-ness in the chorus (such as the na,
na, nahs in this one) rank pretty high on my scale of favorites. It doesn't
take much to make me like it a lot, apparently. Just give me a good beat and
make it easy to dance to, and I'm in the record books like so many American
Bandstand kids before me. - Michelle
So once again we have 2 versions of a song, so we get a
slight peek into the process of what was there, and then what goes away and
what gets added. I have decided that I tend to like the version I heard
first, maybe I don't like change. The demo of this was released on the
LTD version of SDAA in 2004, then the "finished" version was on Songs for
the End of the World in 2012, so we had a long time to live with the first
version. My favorite line in the whole song is "I'm only human so I fuck it
up" and wouldn't you know, that's one of the things that got changed. Damn
it! I also liked "shucks" better than "I guess" (I must have missed it). And
very similar to Let Me In, he adds more to the ending. There seems to be
two schools of thought here - is this song about "love" (I agree with
Michelle, this should have been "sex screws me up") in general, or a
specific instance. I tend to lean toward a more general outlook. Maybe
something specific triggered it, but also inspired this poetic
retrospective. The thing I dislike the most about this song, is having to
count the “na nas” when double checking the lyrics. :-) - rlh
