I GET
EXCITED
(Music & Lyrics by Rick Springfield)Well, you admit
you like the game
But you're not gonna play
You just ignore what your body's tryin' to say
I got the feelin' that you're playin'
And we're both gonna win
And I think this angel's about to sin
I GET EXCITED
Just thinkin' what you might be like
I GET EXCITED
There's heaven in your eyes tonight
The fire's ignited down below
It's burning bright
Oh baby, stay, we got all night, all night
Baby please, I can't please
If I'm on my knees tonight
No baby you don't look that nervous
When you bite your lip
You keep 'em open when we kiss
You're a hypocrite
You've got my body dancin' tangos
In three four time
This angel's gonna spread her wings tonight
I GET EXCITED
Just thinkin' what you might be like
I GET EXCITED
There's heaven in your eyes tonight
The fire's ignited down below
It's burning bright
Oh baby, stay, we got all night, all night
We got all night, all night
Baby please, I can't please
If I'm on my knees tonight
Tonight... Tonight...
Baby, I can feel your heart beat
Can't you feel the heat
Baby's got the cold feet, fire below
Oh baby stay we got
Oh baby stay we got
All night, all night
We got all night, all night
Baby please, I can't please
If I'm on my knees
All night, all night
We got all night, all night
Baby please, I can't please
If I'm on my knees
Tonight, Tonight
(total playing time 2:32)

According to US For all my reasons of starting the album from the other side, this is truly the gem of this side of the album. Okay, I know the whole referring to albums having sides is dating me but I can't help it. I kind of miss that on today's CD's, sometimes I'll look at the back and try to figure out where the artist would've cut it to split it into two sides. Lame I know, but it doesn't take much to amuse me with new music these days.
This song is classic, ultimate Springfield. The video that was pulled from the Live & Kickin' performance epitomizes The Man in all his guitar glory, and still makes me want to squeal when I see it. (see above reference to lame, it probably applies for this statement as well) That is the image that is still stuck in my head to this day when I hear this song.
"No baby you don't look that nervous when you bite your lip"
Okay now, back when I was 13 I used to bite my lip all the time. Seriously, in the winter time my bottom lip was always cracked and bleeding... partially from being chapped but mostly from the biting. So imagine my pleasure if you will, of Rick Springfield mentioning this girl that he gets excited thinking about biting her lip. I think this song actually worsened my lip biting phase, if possible.
"You've got my body dancing tangos in three four time"
I asked my music teacher what three four time was. He didn't ask me why when my eyes got wide. Good thing, I'm not sure when he said, "A minuet is in 3/4 time. It was meant for two people to dance to together" that I could've explained to him why I wanted to know at that point. (thanks to Wikipedia for a little memory jog - I remembered the two people dancing part, but not minuet)
"This angel's gonna spread her wings tonight."
I knew exactly what this meant! I had just finished reading Judy Blume's "Forever".
"Baby's got the cold feet. Fire below. Oh baby stay we got...oh baby stay we've
got"
My favorite part of the song. Really, that's all I wanted to say about that line. I just love the way he sings this part.
For as much as I love this song, and absolutely loved the idea of "guitar girl" when Rick trotted this song out in the late 90's, early 2000's (is that the proper term for that decade?) I was just as happy to see this bit leave the set list. The first few times when this was performed and there was only ONE woman under that guitar and on that stage with Rick, it was every woman's fantasy. I'll admit it was mine too. I'm sure I would've been one of those who either forgot the words and/or clammed up while up there, but the goal of being in-between Rick and his guitar would've been achieved and I could've died a happy, ecstatic woman. I will also admit to being up on that stage a few times in the melee, but I'm claiming it as a mix of temporary insanity followed by my need to make that spectacle a little more exciting for myself. Honestly, before it died it was an embarrassing sight watching some of those fans up there. I know lots of photographers who had refused to photo that part of the show eventually, because after every show the email lists would be full of people looking for pictures of their moment on stage with Rick.
I would love for Rick to add this one back to the set list in the future, if only for the opportunity to see him sing this by himself in it's entirety. I'm not sure that could happen at this point, but a girl could dream.

This song ranks up in the top of the `hottest' and coolest Rick Springfield songs of all times. How could you NOT love this song? Anyone who's ever had `fireworks' with another person would surely appreciate this song. And Rick puts it together so eloquently. What a way with words!
The slow guitar strumming in the beginning is a nice intro to this one….then Rick's clear voice breaking in, in a low tone…almost like it's a secret. "Well you admit you like the game but your not gonna play." {she flirts, talks about love & relationships…teases maybe? But then she plays hard to get. She's holding out on him.} "You'll just ignore what your body is trying to say." {she wants to be with him but maybe she's afraid} "I've got the feeling that you're playing and we're both gonna win. And I think this angel's about to sin." *scrape me off the floor!* {well yes…Rick could probably 'make' a nun sin! LOL} Suddenly the pace picks up. It's interesting how the chorus breaks in so urgently with several voices singing at once…"I get excited! Just thinking what you might be like. I get excited! There's heaven in your eyes tonight. The fire's ignited! Down below it's burning bright." What a cool word to rhyme with `excited.` I don't know that I would have thought of that. I believe Rick made this part sound urgent on purpose, to make the point that he was beyond ready to be with this woman. He was longing for her. This is one of his songs that has a lot of `spiritual' or religious-type words or those you hear used within religion, with words like angel, wings, heaven, sin, fire, hypocrite. He has quite a knack for writing that way.
How hot is that second verse…after a lead up verse like the first?! To answer a question of Rick's, to the fans: Now did I really know what this song meant when I first heard it? No. Not exactly, but sort of. I discovered a lot of that after listening to SHSMY a few times. (maybe because of SHSMY?!) That's when it all hit me. One of the funniest RS memories I have from then is the look in my mother's eyes the first time she heard me singing along to Rick when he says, "This angels gonna spread her wings tonight." I was close to the bedroom door, sitting in the floor, singing away when she happened by with laundry in hand. She literally put on her brakes and backed up to my door, (my heart sank) looked dead at me and said, "WHAT did he just say?" Well you can imagine the discussion we had as I defended Rick (with my knowing at this point she was right…that it was not a 'spiritual' reference at all!) She didn't seem to keen on Rick after that. That's when the headphones began to emerge even more…from that day on. Especially while listening to Rick music!
So Rick could tell that she wanted him as badly as he did her…"no baby you don't look that nervous when you bite your lip. You keep `em open when we kiss, you're a hypocrite." {Again…the game of cat and mouse. She didn't want to be too easy!} "You got my body dancing tangos in 3-4 time. This angel's gonna spread her wings tonight." That has got to be one of my favorite RS lyrics of all times. I like his use of the words "tango" and "wings," and how he sort of disguises what he's trying to say.
Yet another sexy verse when he says, "baby I can feel your heartbeat, can't you feel the heat? Baby's got the cold feet, fire below. Oh baby stay we got…oh baby stay we got…all night." He realizes she is nervous and possibly afraid to `let go' of her inhibitions. He assures her they can take their time, they have all night. Or then what a visual when Rick says, "baby please, I can't please if I'm on my knees." So my guess is that he's `begging' and pleading with her at this point. That alone is a crime!
I also like when Rick uses the word "baby" in his lyrics. I've always thought that was a sweet `pet name' for a loved one. I counted! He uses it 11 times in 2 minutes and 30 seconds worth of song. Cute! It is also a perfect way for him to substitute a word that lets you know he was crazy over this woman, but it keeps her name private. I really didn't know WHO this song was written for back then. At least not for a few years until I learned how serious he and B. had become. Then I only wondered. Recently I did hear Rick say that this song was written about her. Does it spoil the song for me?! Honestly…just a teeny bit. LOL But…it was a significant part of their relationship---their courtship, so it's a part of Rick's history. I like that he shares these parts of himself, and how he creates such a great song from those feelings. I only recently, in the last few years learned of the IGE thing Rick used to do in concert. Talk about a shock when I discovered he was choosing someone to play guitar between HE and the guitar for this song! Ah yes…one of Rick's best songs to date.

Ohhh, pitter patter goes my heart when I hear the opening tune to this song! I really do get excited when I hear this one. I love the urgency in which he says
"I get excited, Just thinkin' what you might be like" I love the way that it goes from a slow tempo, to one that sorta jumps out at you. I think it really used to scare me. LOL!
I was one of those young, innocent girls who had no clue what this song was about and when I really figured it out...whoah!! That was an awesome eye opener! A really hot one, this is.......thanks to my mom for letting me listen and jam to all of this when I was so clueless as to what it really meant, and I know she was cringing...lol!
The infamous IGE song, I was one of those lucky (or unlucky) that actually got onto the stage for one of those now-ended fiascos. Noo, I wasn't that lucky to be the guitar girl, but I did get a hug when it was all over....and to my dismay.....could not for the life of me even remember what the heck the song was that we had sang, when it was all said and done.
Anyhow, this is a great song and one that will never grow old for me. It always amazes me how Rick can write a song and have so much meaning in it and be really discreet about it. Honestly, this is one of the better songs, in my opinion, from this album.

Oh Lordy lordy lordy!! Good Golly! I Get Excited whenever I hear the intro to this song
because it is sooo intense in a way that relates to sexual discovery. The guitar introduction
reminds me of a the sexual appetite of the male adolescents' brain...how worked up he gets
just thinking about the possibility of 'getting his'. The guitar sounds like you are reading
all of the scheming thoughts in a boy's head(s). Even my friends who are not avid Rick
fans love this song.
Full of anticipation, very cat and mouse, flirtatious bantering, teasing, no means yes, c'mon
you know you want it...all these things are running through your mind and then your body starts
talking you into diving into what is being suggested. That feeling is very hard to duplicate...the
feeling of 'do I or don't I', but Rick captures it so well with this song.
Just how does he get inside a woman's head? I cannot even break down this song because
every word speaks (screams) for itself. It is what it is. I will say that to hear these words
come from his lips, it makes it that much more effective.
As he does his best to convince 'her' to do the nasty, his ego shines through, full of
confidence (this angel's gonna spread her wings tonight), and he adds a touch of sensitivity
in conveying he will not warn her about the door hitting her on the way out after the deed is
done (we've got all night).
As for lamenting for the days of being the IGE girl, I never could have even considered it.
Can you believe I am too shy? I mean, I could not even give him flowers until this year
(was it Windsor) let alone anything else. I still have a hard time looking him in the eye. Of
course, if you were IGE girl you would not have to look him in they eye, but would need
to remain composed enough to sing while your ass was against his everything. Quiver.
- Kat M.
Clearly he really liked this girl and wanted to go to bed with her.
I think that's pretty apparent. He is trying to break down her walls. He feels she is leading him on to a certain extent. He is almost
begging her here. There are some great lines in this song: "the fire is
ignited down below, this angel's gonna spread her wings tonight, Baby
please, I can't please you if I'm on my knees tonight." He uses the word tonight so many times throughout this
song, but amazingly enough it just belongs there. It's almost as if he was thinking if he said it
enough times it would happen tonight. He's such a great lyricist. The song starts out as just a simple little riff that starts out
with just one guitar and then becomes more intense. I like this song and consider it one of the highlights of this album.
