HEAVEN
(Words and Music by Rick Springfield, Bob Marlette and Tim Pierce)

Hey
Every night I go to sleep
You're there baby, inside my head
What's the secret that you keep
It's not fair baby, I toss in bed
One night I had the strangest dream
Dreamt I made love to you
You better believe it, it felt so real

Spent the night in the sea of love
Sea of love
It's crazy the attraction that I feel
Now baby
It hit like a heart attack
I feel it in my soul
But the train's running off the track
And I can't get control
Sleep-walking in the house of love
I heard Saint Peter was calling
As I was making love to you

Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
I woke up in your arms, yeah
Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
Nothing now will ever be the same

Saint Peter call me back again
Take me there baby, you got me good
I want to hear his choir of angels sing
I say a prayer baby, I knock on wood
That every night I wake up
Restless from the heat
You got to believe I never had such
A physical dream baby
It's built on sacred ground, your image in my head
So I lay my body down on the alter of my bed
I wait in the house of love
And hope for sleep to come calling
So I'll be making love to you

Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
I woke up in your arms, yeah
Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
Nothing now will ever be the same

Dreamed I'd died and gone to heaven
Dreamed my life was through
Dreamed I'd died and gone to heaven
Woke in love with you

It hit like a heart attack
It came from out of nowhere
But the train's running off the track
On a fragile wing and a prayer
Sleep-walking in the house of love
I heard Saint Peter was calling
As I was making love to you

Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
I woke up in your arms, yeah
Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
Nothing now will ever be the same

Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
I woke up in your arms, yeah
Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
Nothing now will ever be the same

Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
I woke up in your arms, yeah
Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
Nothing now will ever be the same

Dreamed that I'd died and gone to heaven
I woke up in your arms

According to US

Once I get past the feeling I'm about to watch an episode of Miami Vice from the beginning music, I really enjoy this spot on the CD. Now don't take the Miami Vice theme music as a barb against the song, because I totally dug that show so this is cool to me. Plus Rick always looks good in pink, and it doesn't hurt to picture him wearing some 80's pushed up sleeved pastel suit while performing this one. Step into my brain a bit more, because frankly - I could have written this song.

Every night I go to sleep, you're there baby inside my head (yep -many nights I have dreamed of Rick, I'm not ashamed to admit it here) Thanks dude for putting it in a tune, now I can honestly sing this line out loud in the real world, where no one is the wiser. Ok, so we're following Rick into his dreams..wonder what that'd go for on ebay...dreamt I made love to you... SCREECH. Ok, outta my head! Insert your own erotic fantasies here.

I really love the theme of this song being that dreaming about making love and waking up in your loved one's arms puts you right into heaven. I'd buy a ticket into that dreamland if it meant waking up with a smile on my face every morning. I did not see any pun intended on the mention of St. Peter-seemed like the natural way to go to me being a good catholic girl and all, but that is a hoot of a pun now that it's been pointed out. In fact, I can't help but smirk now at that part in the song. St Peter indeed, you've got me good :-)

I don't think Rick was thinking this song was Grammy material by any means, but I am glad it was included here. It's one of those take it or leave it songs, but it does make for a good listen and can add a little spark to your day if you're in need of a pick-me-up from Rick. It's got a good toe tappin', steering wheel slamming (if you're driving) beat and that gets a thumbs up in my playlist.  - Michelle P.

What a strange song this is - obsession, fantasy, longing, all wrapped around religious imagery (heaven, St Peter,  angels choir)......I like this song, for the most part. I like the music and I really like Rick's voice. It is extremely obsessive, though. WOW.....
There are a few phrases that I find a little cheesy - Sea of Love and House of Love......all right already!
Again we have the whole love/sex thing with a lot of religious imagery, which considering the name of the song, I guess it's more appropriate than ever.
I think my favorite line is "so I lay my body down on the alter of my bed" - that creates such a visual.
And regarding "restless from the heat".....after Scandalous Life, I don't believe I'll ever be able to hear the word heat in a Rick Springfield song and not think of it as meaning something besides the temperature in the room. - rlh

I think on this one *i'm* in the minority saying it is NOT one of my favorite tracks on SS. Maybe it's the repetitiveness of the song (which grates on me by the end) or the tone of the music (did someone say it reminded them of Miami Vice?? LOL)...it's very dissonant...or maybe it is the shallowness of the sentiment. I mean, Psychoactive, Rovianne, Lust...there you get these beautiful, hot, amazing word pictures from him....and here...well...I don't see those amazing, apt descriptions that make me crazy, you know?

I do think the metaphor of God vs. sex is a well written one, but it just doesn't get me where I live the way the other songs do on this album. The references in Soul to Soul from Tao are similar to this, but that song gets me every time with its rich meanings "We don't make love so much as have a bedroom cruxifiction..." and "Somewhere there's an altar she lays herself across it and she hands me the blade but I don't, I don't stick it in..." Have MERCY. Heaven just doesn't seem to speak to me with that kind of depth. - Amy SP
