Haven't I Been Good to You?
(Rick Springfield and Jim Vallance)
Well I'll be lyin' awake, baby late at night
And I call you up
But you're not alone
And I'd wait for you but it just ain't right
To keep my soul on fire with your heart of stone
And I still see how it used to be
But somewhere something changed
And I don't know why
All our friends, you know they love to talk
They've been saying that we'll never make it
I just can't help the way I feel inside
You know it makes me crazy, but I just can't shake it
It would be a crime after all this time
if we had to say goodbye
Before you walk away, think it over
Haven't I Been Good To You?
Don't wanna hear you say
that it's over
Haven't I Been Good To You?
You could leave, you could let it go
Or we could try and make it one way or another
I'll tell you something, it breaks my heart to know that
It could've been easy, but it keeps on getting harder
Now I'm seeing signs, in between the lines
Things that I don't want to know
Before you walk away, think it over
Haven't I Been Good To You?
Don't wanna hear you say
that it's over
Haven't I Been Good To You?
I could wait for a miracle
But I'd be waiting for nothing at all
Cause I know there's no miracle
I'm just waiting for the curtain to fall
Now I'm seeing signs, in between the lines
Things that I don't want to know
Before you walk away, think it over
Haven't I Been Good To You?
(Haven't I been Good To You?)
Don't wanna to hear you say
that it's over
Oh Haven't I Been Good To You?
(haven't I been good to you?)
Before you walk away think it over
Haven't I Been Good To You?
(haven't I been good to you?)
Don't wanna to hear you say
that it's over now
Haven't I Been Good To You?
(haven't I been good to you?)
(total playing time 4:15)

According to US
This is such a great song! What a surprise when I heard it and thought to myself, “why does this song sound so familiar?” and then I read the notes & realized that another artist had a radio hit with it, but that it is actually
Rick's song! I was thrilled to learn he wrote it, since I had liked this song during it’s radio play. I just never knew at that time that he’d written it. I am even more thrilled with the song hearing Rick sing it. It sounds so much better coming from him. It has a great nostalgic feel for me.
This is another one of those whispery, low-voiced songs of his that just sounds immaculate to me. His voice gives me a shiver with every word! The music is incredibly catchy & dreamy. Or is it his voice that’s so dreamy in this one? Anyway, they are a perfect blend.
The lyrics are awesome all the way through! One of my favorite lines is, “and I’d wait for you but it just ain’t right to keep my soul on fire with your heart of stone.” That line makes perfect sense, and what a great way to phrase it. Especially since he says he calls her up & finds out she’s not alone. I think he knew already that there may be someone else waiting in the wings for her when he says, “now I’m seeing signs in between the lines, things that I don’t wanna know.” He seems to be hoping against hope that it’s not really true. “I could wait for a miracle, but I’d be waiting for nothing at all. Cause I know there’s no miracle, I’m just waiting for the curtain to fall.” He’s just waiting for her to call the shot, wondering if it’s really over.
It’s obvious this song was written during a difficult time in his relationship, during a break-up or on the verge of one. “It would be a crime after all this time if we had to say goodbye.” In such a situation, it really does feel like a crime, after all the work two people put into a relationship. Another great line, “all our friends, you know they love to talk, they’ve been saying that we’ll never make it.” Isn’t that so true? It always seems there’s those who don’t want to see others having any happiness. Or they simply love to gossip about others troubles. I would imagine that’s a very common situation in the life of anyone in the public eye, people all around them talking & waiting to see every flaw & failure in their relationships. Too much scrutiny would not be easy on any relationship. But despite everything, he feels he’s been good to her & doesn’t want her to “walk away” from all the love they’ve built. What a beautifully written song about wanting to hold on to the one you love!
