Pretty Little Mess
(Rick Springfield/Matt Bissonette)

She Calls
She calls me from this broken town
She blames the boys she runs with
for the drugs and alcohol
She's climbing the walls
She falls apart just as the sun goes down
She says she must get away from it all
Are you man enough?
To come and save me cause the boys play rough

What a mess.  What a pretty little mess you are
Stuck up on the shelf, little Miss self destruction

I remember you
A teenage Mary with an attitude
Good go, Baby let the show begin
But I know it's true
Abandoned girls it seems they all get blue
They spend their lives living on the outside
Looking in
She says Baby won't you save my soul
But only when she's lost control

What a mess, what a pretty little mess you are
Stuck up on the shelf, little Miss self destruction
What a mess, what a beautiful mess you are
Higher than a kite at your midnight confession

You lied to me
I always forgave you
I wish I could save you

What a mess, what a pretty little mess you are
Stuck up on the shelf, little Miss self destruction
What a mess, what a beautiful mess you are
Higher than kite, at your midnight confession

And a walking contradiction
Seeking benediction from anyone.....

I love this little unreleased gem. I got to thinking that if Rick just did an album of all the unofficial, unreleased, unheard of unless you’re one of THOSE fans material, well I’d be pretty damn happy. You’ve got to wonder, especially with a song like this, what the heck was wrong with it that it didn’t make the cut.
For some reason, this song reminds me of Karma’s Big Beautiful Friday Night. Not that they sound similar, but that they’re both melancholy story telling songs. The guitar sounds simple, and it lets the lyrics work their wonderful magic. His voice just blends perfectly with the story, so that I want to just sit there and let the words wash over me. When I listen to this one, I see one of those women who look gorgeous all the time, but even more so when they cry. Since I’m an ugly crier, I’m a tad bit jealous of such ladies. Pretty little mess calls him at the beginning of the song. Of course, he’s going to help. He thinks it’s cute she’s caught up in these latest shenanagins. Do you want to know why I know he’s thinks it’s cute? Because she’s a pretty little mess. Not a damn hot mess. That’s a different song, probably sung by some rapper.
The bonus lines: You lied to me. I always forgave you. I wish I could save you.
Are you talking about someone else, Mr. Springfield, or yourself? Knowing what I know now, given all that you’ve shared with us (a double-edged sword, indeed) I think I’d call you a pretty little mess as well. That’s the problem, you’re so damn pretty, and your music speaks to me like no one else’s. This is my benediction. - Michelle

This is a very beautiful song. The lyrics, the music, the vocals, and the piano all blend so well together. The talking in the beginning and later on in the song are confusing somewhat, because I can not make them out. They do, however, add something different to the song, and as we all know by now, that goes without saying in any song written by Rick. I love it! - Amy L
