SAILING
(words and music by Terry Britten)

Maybe tomorrow with the wind on my side
I will sail across the ocean
To the island of white
The sea is pink
Only one star in sight
That's where I'll be going
'Cause I'm searching for the light

There goes my mind again
It just can't stop it's wondering around
'Cause it wants to know everything that's going on, on, on, on

Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
Could be I'd find promotion
Maybe I can be what my teacher was to me
He was a man
Giving the truth to me
Let me see for myself what's going on
Maybe soon I will see the great horizon

The velvet sails of my ship in the night
Give away the colors of the faces delight
Land ho' was the cry of the day
As I turned to face the captain
When I heard a voice say

There goes my mind again
It just can't stop this wondering around
'Cause he wants to know everything that's going on, on, on, on

Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time
Sailing across the ocean
Sailing across the sea of time ...

I really like this Zoot song! This has got to be my favorite song from Zoot Locker that was NOT written by Rick. It has a pleasing melody to me and an overall good feeling to it, although I think there is a lot of doubt under the surface. A mixture really, of doubt and hope. One of my favorite parts are the verses that say, "there goes my mind again, I just can't stop it's wondering around." His voice sounds great there. I really think Darryl had a nice singing voice. At times it was silky smooth, and this song is one of those times.

The lyrics paint a beautiful picture in one's mind of a ship sailing on the ocean and all the beauty that goes with that, although I don't think he is talking about an ACTUAL ocean here, or even a real ship. I believe he is referring to his career when he talks about the "horizon." He is "sailing" along through life (working at it more like) and hoping his `ship will come in.' One of the places I find this apparent, at least in my mind, is when he says, "Maybe I can be what my teacher was to me, he was a man giving the truth to me. Let me see for myself what's going on. Maybe soon I will see the great horizon." I wonder if the teacher he refers to is his rock and roll hero, a musical `idol' he looked up to. He heard truths through the music, and now he wants to follow his own musical path. He wants to do it his own way, and hopes that his break and success will also come. He feels it is just over the horizon.

I like the imagery in the first verse too. He is hoping the wind (fate, the luck of the cards, the Gods) will be on his side, perhaps pushing him in the direction he needs to go with his life. He is seeking out his `star` (his fame) for there is only one star in sight. But his worried mind is messing with him…it keeps doubting and `wondering'---"what if." He has the normal insecurities that most people have when there are hopes and dreams involved. I think this was a great concept for a song, and the writing was so much better in this song than many of the other non-Rick songs on Zoot Locker. - Kelley Pearson

Oddly enough, I think I kind of like this song. It's really not all that bad considering it's from the 70's which is a time for music that never appealed to me all that much.

The lyrics are somewhat simple and the song itself is not that long, so that really helps, also...hee hee!

Honestly, since Rick didn't write these few songs at the beginning of the album, I find I don't like them as much and I've said that before. However, they are just way more 'simplistic' and don't have as much meaning or 'gusto' to them as the ones he wrote. Maybe I am just prejudiced, but if Rick himself would have at least co-wrote these other songs, he could have added way more feeling to them. - Amy L.
