Ricktopia's Interview with Ronnie
Grinel appeared originally on www.ricktopia.com.
We would like to introduce
to you Ronnie Grinel!!!
Ronnie had many a job on the Karma Tour.
He had to be the one to keep Rick Springfield, healthy, in good
spirits and
on time.
He single handily kept Rick's shows from becoming totally out
of control. And his roll seemed to be that of parent to the group
(we all know how out of control "I Get Excited" could
get without this man herding us off back into our seats). Ronnie
also sat in on drums on several occasions and kept the backbeat
like a Pro (Go Bucky!). We would say that this man was Rick's
right hand.
We give you Ronnie Grinel......OH BUCKY!
What do you
do for fun when you aren't working?
I check directly
into the nearest hospital and get a transfusion of Keith Richard's
recycled blood. Unfortunately by the time the buzz gets good it's
time to go back to work.
What
is your favorite city that you have visited on this tour or
at any time?
Los Angeles...That's
where my wife, doggie and kitties are and...It's also where the largest
supply of Keith Richard's recycled blood is stored!
What
is an average workday like for you?
Like four average
workdays
What
is your favorite kind of music/artists?
Mainly Rhythm
and Blues, Classic Rock (Zeppelin) and the darling of them all, "America's
Sweetheart" Rick Springfield (Don't worry, I have made an appointment
to get my lips surgically removed from Rick's butt).
How long have you been working in the music industry?
I got paid
to play drums for the first time in 1962...Let's do the math...ouch!!...38
years.
What
is the best/worst thing about your job?
Rick is definitely
the best thing (and not in a gay way!). The worst thing is traveling
with a band of all men, which mostly sucks (but not in a gay way!)
What
is the most interesting thing/event you have witnessed during
the Karma tour?
Women, not only
throwing their underwear on stage during the show, but also coming
to us after the show expecting to get them back. Lance would usually
be wearing them by that time anyway. I say "finders keepers."
What
motivates you?
My wife, handcuffs
and a very large feather!
Do you have a favorite Springfield song? If so what?
There are
too many great songs for me to pick a favorite. Among the top contenders
are: Souls, April 24, 1981, Karma, Allyson, Rock of Life, Free...just
to name a few.
What
was the last CD you bought?
Led Zeppelin,
the BBC series.
Professionally,
what has been your biggest challenge?
To single-handedly
get fifty drunk women off the stage during "Excited" and
not get hit by one of them or a flying guitar!
Have
you toured with other artists? If so, with whom?
I have played
drums (touring and recording) with: Joe Walsh, Carole King, Dan Fogelberg,
Keith Moon, Fools Gold, Randy Meisner (Eagles), Rick Roberts (Fireball),
Southern, Hillman and Furay.
What
was your first impression of Rick?
Amazement!
Are
there any unique challenges of touring with Rick?
Finding a Starbucks
in Idaho.
The
tour has been long and played many different type/size venues.
What size venue do you prefer?
The full ones!
In
one or two words, describe each member of the band.
Rick: Talented
and Wet
Jack: Jack
Lance: Gay
Matty: Bitter and Gay
Dave: Evil
George: Sturdy
Matt (New Guy): Probably Gay
David Leon: Over qualified
Do
you play an instrument yourself?
Obviously not
very well (drums).
How
did you get involved with Rick?
I lost a bet
in a previous life.
What
are your plans after the tour?
To move up to
an electric wheelchair.
Where
do you see yourself in the next 10 - 20 years?
Social Security!
If
you could chose any other career than the one you have now,
what would it be?
Music!
If you
could change anything, and we do mean anything...whether it be
world peace or your past...what would it be?
For Matty to
discover his true sexual identity.
What
is the best part about being a part of the music industry?
Free CDs and
T-shirts.
What
would you consider to be the advantages or disadvantages of touring
with Rick?
The greatest
advantage is Rick!
